Recycling sweaters

I have been gathering materials from the thrift store for over a year but the recent shirt cushion was my first official project completed.

Recycling sweaters

For the past few days I have been unraveling an aqua-blue sweater. It is a Ralph Lauren 100% cotton sweater knit in Taiwan in a very current blue color. I have awesome felt and now a silk scarf in the same color. Sure it is loud but I think that will make a host of whimsical items.

The fiber itself is made of 15 strands that are quite similar to embroidery thread. I have knit a sample using 5 strands and will continue to adjust until I get a nice fabric.

The other 5-6 sweaters I bought were almost all wool and did not felt as I wished. However they are in awesome coordinated shades of pinks and purple and should also make nice softies, booties and hats!

UPDATE: I received a lot of visits from people looking for info about unraveling sweaters. This is the first time I have done it. I specifically bought this sweater to unravel it because it looked to be handmade.

Here is a great tutorial with lots of photos on unraveling thrifted sweaters. And another one here.
